Term 4, Week 9 9/12/2024 - 13/12/2024
From the Principal's Desk
Greetings Parents, Caregivers and Whanau, Week 9, Friday 13th December 2024
We are coming down to the last week of school and we still have many learning activities planned for the students. The expectation is that all students come to school as we don't want anyone missing out. I reminded everyone at assembly today that we are doing the "work hard to reap the reward" - Maori proverb "Mauri mahi, Mauri ora"
Prizegiving at the Whitianga town Hall on Friday 20th of December and starts at 9.45am. This is a special occasion where we get dressed up and celebrate as a whole team. We are looking forward to ending our great year in a positive way!
On Monday we will be sending home the end-of-year reports, we had some glitches that we needed to sort out. We will endeavour to have these reports as accurate as possible and please let us know if there is a mistake so we can fix it. These reports explain the improvements and achievements in learning over the year and also explain what class your child is in next year. Included in the envelope is a list of stationery/equipment needed for 2025.
The photo below is of our some students who have already started fundraising for trips and camps next year. Their combined efforts on the BBQ and selling milkshakes have already raised $843. A great start and thanks to Hellers for the donation of Sausages.
Recently we have had some amazing trips to local areas to link into our learning and/or have invited experts to come into school to share with the school. The teaching team have reviewed these trips and understand the importance of connecting more with our wider community and environment. We have already had lots of discussions about the possible trips and camps for future years. More information to come out next year

"Would you like some Sauce with that banger?"
Our Monday "Wet and Wild" day
As part of the fundraising by Ella and Leti with the "Shake Shack". They were able to fundraise and purchase equipment for our Wet and Wild day run by our Year 8's. This was so popular all students voted to run it every year from now on.
Richard
Marine Education with Marine Maestro - Richard explained some of the traditional gathering and fishing skills and techniques in Aotearoa.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, we were lucky enough to have two learning sessions with the Marine Maestro, Richard De Hamel. Richard taught us all about the creatures in the ocean and how they survive. We got to wear some funny hats that represented these creatures and Lucy got the full experience of being in the ocean - which included being wet, salty and low vision and sight!
During the second session, we learnt about Maori fish hooks and other marine-related history in Aotearoa. We even got to try and make fire! (To cook the fish).
By Maddie and Pippa - Room 6
From the students
He was really Funny, He taught us facts about stuff we didn't know, We learnt some skills to make smoke and then fire, and how to make fish =ing gear out of natural materials of bone, harakeke, wood and rock.

Year 8 Kayak trip
A huge thanks to Mike, Hayden and Georgia who took us on an amazing adventure from Hahei to Cathedral Cove. The students highlight must of been the kayaking and hot chocolates on the beach.
My highlight was listening to Hayden retell the history of the area.
