Term 2 Week 3 - 13/5/24 - 17/5/24
From the Principal's Desk
Greetings Parents, Caregivers and Whanau,
This week someone asked me how I was going. and if I was enjoying being a principal. To answer I replied, Yes I'm loving it! Sir Gordon Tietjens said to me 'be passionate about what you do and you will do well." I have a real passion to ensure our students get the best possible opportunities and that our teachers are supported to be the best teachers that they can be. I am fortunate to be a principal.
Striking Gold
In the first three weeks, I could sum up my first impressions of Whenuakite community as being "Kind, Trustworthy and Enthusiastic. It is now time for us to be "Ïnnovative", to look at challenges as opportunities and as Captain James T Kirk said "To boldly go where no one has gone before", so jump on board and let's shoot for the stars. Or as the Ngati Whakuae iwi - Matua Reg would say, "grab a paddle, jump in the waka and let's start paddling in the same direction."
"Vision Map" for our future
We have now had 80 returns with lots of outstanding ideas. We are now getting the first draft vision map ready to share with the BOT which will help direct us for the next 3-years as part of our Strategic Direction. This will then sent out to the whole community for more consultation, and consideration and ultimately to gain support. The final approvals are by the fundraising committee and then the Board of Trustees.
Change is Good......Bring it on.
Tuwhitia te hopo - feel the fear and do it anyway (Nā Wharehuia Milroy)
If you have been at school in the last few days, you should see some positive changes. We are continuing to build a Positive Culture 4 Learning -PC4L. Property projects are well underway and I really need your support to make dreams a reality. Read below on the wish lists from students and staff, if you can help in any way, don't be a stranger!
House Groups - Whare nui!
Each House - Whare nui met this week to consider their Fauna - (native bird) and Flora (native tree) Each group will vote for leaders for a variety of roles in and around the school and wider community.
Health Survey
The Health survey had 45 copies returned and we will now start going through and looking at what we need to add or delete in the health programmes. Once completed we will run a parent/teacher evening to go through this
Appreciate Support Staff Day
Today Nicola, myself and some students put on a spread for our support staff and our Learning Support Assistants. Again with out our strong paddlers we would not make it to the shoreline.
Electives
After a very successful Mother's Day, I didn't think life could get any better and then we had the Electives run by Shona and her merry helpers. WOW, what some amazing arts and crafts that we are offering the students. My favourite so far was the pool noodle rockets, I am not totally sure if it was arts and crafts but great fun! Thanks to the parents who have come in and help. Still heaps of time to join the fun.

Counties Shotokan Karate Whenuakite
Just to let you all know our amazing students are gearing up for their next grading which will take place on Thursday 23rd May. Our students have been working very hard to learn their new katas and syllabus.
This date will be only for students who are grading as we will not be able to run normal classes as well as grading.
All students to be there ready to begin at 5.30.
We have had a few inquiries for new beginners. The week following this would be an ideal time for you to start coming along.
Due to a restructuring in our beginning belt system we are lowering the age for our 5-5.30pmclass on Thursdays to 5-6 years.
If you have any queries please feel free to catch me for a chat, email me on leighdeb@gmail.com or message/call me on 0272899604.

Mercury Bay junior game fishing tournament & nz national junior tournament.
The 2 comps were held in the school holidays and 3 whenuakite kids came top in mercury bay and placed in the nationals.
I think they should be formally recognized at assembly for thier achievements. Can you do that?
Attached are the results that you could use as certificates.
Approx 10 whenuakite kids entered, and 131 kids in the bay entered making it the highest attended local kids comp in nz.

Football
From the President.
Wow, what a fantastic first Saturday of the football season. The sun was shining and all four teams had home games. It was great to see such a huge turnout of Whenuakite players, all with huge smiles on their faces. Also great to see so many parents there supporting their kids on the sidelines.
U12s Whenuakite U12 vs Paeroa OrangeIt was a great first game at home with a good battle between the two teams. Charlie Bahr scored with an amazing header in the opening few minutes and then a second goal later. Farai Gray also got one in the second half. 3-2 at full-time Player of the day - Cale Field and Corey Fraser
U10sWhenuakite U10s vs Hauraki PlainsWhat an excellent start to the season! Our U10s came out firing, Hauraki Plains were an excellent team but with our super fast strikers, some solid defense and great passing through the midfield, as well as our fantastic goal keeping, Whenuakite came away with the win 4-2. Some excellent goals by Noa, Katey, Kaia and Oscar. Super proud of how well the whole team played, showing excellent teamwork. We have a few players who are new to football this year as well as a lot who have made the big jump from U8's to the U10s including our player of the day, Kaia!
