Term 2 Week 4 - 20/5/24 - 24/5/24
From the Principal's Desk
Greetings Parents, Caregivers and Whanau,
A huge thanks to all the parents and caregivers who have been involved with sports or taking children to events and activities. We do have a term filled with learning experiences outside the classroom. This is great as the students can then use these experiences in and through their learning. The opportunities allow them to grow their skills in Reading, Writing and Maths - (Literacy and Numeracy)
Newsletters
In discussions with many parents, whanau and community we have decided to print the newsletter to go home each Friday with students and to also have extras available at school and in the wider community like the Informer. These processes take a little bit of time as we have to find suitable places - businesses at Cooks Beach, Ferry Landing, Hahei and Hot Water Beach to have a stand. Be aware we use Canon photocopiers, a eco-friendly printing company and we purchase recycled paper to print on.
"Vision Map" to "VisionScape" small steps for our future
We have extended the time for YOU to get ideas. Nothing is yet set in concrete, however, we do want to start moving to the next phase which is creating a "VisionScape"- a professional digital drawing map completed by a Landscape/Architect. This will help direct us for the next 3-years as part of our Strategic Direction. This will then sent out to the whole community for more consultation, and consideration and ultimately to gain support for the big Ideas. This is when I need your support to make our students dreams a reality.
House Groups - Whare nui and Kaitiaki
Each House group- "Whare nui" has met to decide their Fauna - (native bird) and Flora (native tree/plant) Each group will vote for leaders - "kaitiaki, mana tangata whenua" for a variety of roles in and around the school and wider community. Then these students will be the link between the students, myself and the BOT to allow us to have more "Student voice - Student Agency" in our kura.
Surveys
The Health survey - There is still time to complete this, to give your input more copies available at school.
Our next survey is about Lunches in school and if you and your children feel we could benefit from having the opportunity for this. This should be inserted as a flyer in this edition, more copies at school if needed.
Board of Trustees - BoT
We had our second BoT meeting for the term. I would like to say it is great to have a very committed and pro-active team - parents, who want the best for all the akonga - students. We set some short-term goals and spent a considerable amount of time on the Vision map for some long-term success. With Ray steering the waka we are paddling in the same direction. I am also in the process of setting my professional Learning goals for my own professional growth cycle.
Rugby
On Wednesday I was very fortunate to go to the Boys Rugby at Thames. A special thanks to Chris Bailey for allowing

ICT and Tech to take us into the future
It is hard for us to comprehend how fast technology develops. As educators, we also need to create a balance between the basics - skills in learning through the use of high-level thinking skills. This week the team looked at a "3-year ICT strategy" that will be taken to the next BOT to consider. This is linked to new developments in Information Communication Technology with all of us being competent, capable, communicating and connecting. Then this helps effective pedagogy by teacher actions promoting

Key Competencies

LAST WEEKS REPORT FOR U6 &U8s from Sophie.
Yay, the soccer season is underway and we have kicked off the season with some awesome training sessions for the U6s on a Tuesday and the U8s on a Thursday! The coaches have been upskilling over the preseason and learnt lots of games that teach the players skills in a fun and engaging way! Our first games we verse Mercury Bay Football Club at home (Whenuakite School). It was a beautiful and fun morning filled with lots of games and everyone had a great time! ~ Players of the day for U6's were Thea, Ezra, and Sage. ~ Players of the day for the U8s were Ashton, Kahu, Indi, and Sparrow. Thanks to the coaches and all the U6/U8 parent support for making the start of the season a successful one. As well as a special mention to Sarah our super club leader. We wish you all a great season and look forward to a fun winter playing soccer together
Saturday 18th May
UNDER 6 MINI KICKERS
On Saturday, 18th May, the U6 team was invited to play the team from Te Rerenga school. It was nice to see all the players having a good time and showing great sportsmanship on the field and from the sideline. The well-deserved Players of the Day were Benji Norriss, Dennys Stephenson, Jonty Browne and Blake Thomson. And as always, when playing Te Rerenga, the players were rewarded with a much-appreciated sausage sizzle after the game.
UNDER 8s
A glorious autumn day greeted the U8 team in Te Rerenga, last Saturday, 18th of May. Both teams did themselves proud, scoring well-deserved goals while showing great sportsmanship. While the younger players, faced the challenge of having to play 3x 15min games (instead of 2x 10min games), the older players were great role models, leading the way. The well-deserved Players of the Day were Christopher Olsen, Jesse Thompson and Hugo Popadich. Well done, team!
UNDER 10s
We had a beautiful sunny day over in Tairua for our game against Tairua School U10s. It was a hard game against a very tough and competitive side. Tairua took the win but Marley scored a beautiful goal and there were some other great attempts.
Players of the Day: Marley Tuinier, Katelyn Wood and Oscar O'Kane
UNDER 12s
Was another nice sunny day at home for the U12s game against Whangamata. We had an exciting game with lots of brilliant plays. But our team was just too strong for them in the end. Final Score 9-1
Player of the day Louie Jensen and Farai Grey
