Te Mātaiaho | The Refreshed Curriculum
Kia ora whanau,
Last Monday, our school was closed for a teacher-only day, and our staff embarked on an exciting journey to explore the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum/Te Mātaiaho. We delved into the new Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Curriculum and discussed how to create a coherent local curriculum that brings the national curriculum to life. Here's a brief update on what we learned:
Te Mātaiaho | The Refreshed Curriculum The refreshed curriculum aims to support every ākonga (learner) in achieving success in their learning. It is committed to upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi, is inclusive, clear about essential learning, and designed to be user-friendly from Year 0 to Year 13. The refreshed curriculum content is being rolled out in phases, with schools and kura having until the beginning of 2027 to fully implement it.
Starting in 2023, history programs nationwide have focused on four significant concept ideas (Aotearoa Histories):
- Māori history is the foundation and continuous history of Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Colonisation and settlement have been central to Aotearoa New Zealand's history for the past 200 years.
- The course of Aotearoa New Zealand's history has been shaped by the use of power.
- Relationships and connections between people and across boundaries have shaped the course of Aotearoa New Zealand's history.
Local Curriculum Guides
The Ministry of Education (MOE) has produced a series of Local Curriculum guides to assist schools in effectively implementing the refreshed national curriculum into their own unique 'local curriculum' design. We are excited to embark on this journey and are actively seeking ways to incorporate these concepts into our Whenuakite curriculum and the K.I.T.E. Way.
Community Partnership
We believe that reviewing the curriculum should be a collaborative effort, and we want to involve our community in this process. We value your unique perspectives, identity, culture, interests, strengths, aspirations, and needs. Our discussions with our whanau, Māori Iwi, and local community will help us unearth our local stories and make the most of the people, places, and resources at our disposal. We aim to enrich our students' learning experiences by building strong, learning-focused relationships within our school and the broader community and iwi.
Your Input Matters
We have begun reviewing what more we can do to further evolve a localized curriculum, what this could look like for Whenuakite School and understanding the Te Mātaiaho | The Refreshed Curriculum. We want your feedback and input. Over the coming months, we will be reaching out to you through polls and information in our newsletters. We will also hold some hui as your voice is invaluable as we shape the curriculum for our K.I.T.E learners.
We will gather more information, however, if you could think about the following in the first instance survey link below (open for one week):
- How would you like to participate in this process? Would you like to be a part of this process?
- What do you believe is important to include in our local curriculum?
- Can you suggest people, groups, or places that can support the development of histories and our local curriculum?
We want to express our gratitude for helping us undertake this in-depth review. It will be instrumental in helping us focus on what truly matters for our learners, their families, and our community.
